Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood

One of the many big reveals I made at the end of April was that I will be teaching, along with a fabulous team of artists, at the Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood Retreat in April of 2013.  I can’t tell you how excited I am about the retreat!  Some mornings as I wake up and step out of bed, it is the very first thing on my mind.

This morning was one of those days. I awoke with a deep desire to share with you a bit about the workshop I am teaching.  Passport to Dreams Come True is a blending of several loves of mine: journaling, paper dolls,  bookmaking, and dreamcasting.

I suppose dreamcasting might be a odd concept to some. For me it means taking a seedling of a dream and looking into the future to help plan out how best to nurture and tend to it; it also means understanding the many courses a dream might take and how to make shifts that will help your heart get what it needs. You might also call it goal setting, but isn’t this so much more interesting!?

During the Passport to Dreams Come True, I will be introducing techniques for quieting the restless mind so that you can tune into the desires of your heart. I will offer a series of visual journaling exercises which when combined with simple bookmaking techniques will give you a guide for where your dream might grow.  Together we will explore the landscape of bringing a dream to fruition, the unexpected turns, the disappointments and exhilarating highs.  In the end, you will have the beginnings of a booklet to turn to as your dream takes on its own life and ongoing exercises to add to it in order to document the journey to its becoming.

Class members will be encouraged to share in small circles, so not only will you walk away with your own inner wisdom but just might gain from the insight of another. Sharing is always voluntary.  This workshop will be designed to value your unique creative process.

This class will offer you the opportunity to create a really cool, personalized art book. The techniques are flexible and can be used through out the course of life. They serve as a fun and creative way to dive into dreams that have been quietly waiting their turn or to jump start an old journey that has lost a bit of its vigor.

Does this class somehow speak to you? Hop over and take a look at Creatives Celebrating Sisterhood.  If you have any questions specific to my class, either leave a note in the comments or feel free to email me directly, rae@creativitytribe.com.

I will be chatting a bit more about the workshop in the future, but just had to toss this out there today in hopes that a few of you might just need what the retreat is offering.

If you do sign up, make sure to let me know, if you would. I would LOVE a chance to meet you!

May Flowers

When I first began blogging, I wrote out my thoughts, tucked in a few pictures, published the post, and hoped with some desperation to be found by some human being (any human being) out in the world.  Before long, I found a weekly challenge to become part of and that began the forming of a few key relationships online that helped me have courage enough to grow the writing voice I have today.

At the end of April, I was introduced to a challenge I wanted very much to do. I found myself happily busy with other projects but collected thoughts and images in hopes of joining the challenge somewhere along the way. Well, today is that day!

   ~~~~~~~~~ May Flower Challenge ~~~~~~~~~~
My Fly Tribe sister, Lori Moon, has issued an invitation to consider with word and image the sometimes simple, always intriguing flower. Had this challenge been offered up last May, I am afraid I would have found myself empty handed. We have been suffering with a drought in Texas, but the last several months, the tides seem to be turning and all the world is abloom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I hope my gathering of flowers and their friends brings you joy and enlightens you heart.

Hop over to the May Flower Challenge to see what’s blooming there!

Top 10 Inspirational Tips for Living like a RockStar

My 300th post! Yay!

***********************************************************

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and music is the key to the soul.  If that is at all true, I hope these pics taken at a concert I recently attended will speak to your soul.

I ended my week by joining a handful of friends for the Ted Nugent, Styx, and REO Speedwagon concert. This isn’t necessarily my list of go-to music, but I was indulging my inner groupie. And looking for an adventure!

The concert was a blast. I had so much fun taking photos. But what I really loved were the lessons I felt like I was learning from these rock legends. And I couldn’t wait to come back and share them with you.

Top 10 Inspirational Tips for Living like a RockStar!

************************************************************************

1. The World is your stage, own it!

**********

2.  Don’t just show up for the money. Give the world something worth listening to. (This moment captures REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin very eloquently and passionately sharing a call to action with the crowd. His message: We all have something valuable to express and the world would be a much better place if we made room in our hearts to listen to one another. This was the highlight of the concert for me.)

**********

3. Be the RockStar that lives in your heart. Don’t be small about it. Exude it!

**********

4. When in doubt, keep your head down and focus on staying with the groove.

**********

5. Look for moments when the music stops, when the crowd is roaring so loudly that it almost sounds like the hum of silence. Slip quietly into the shadow, acknowledge the beauty of the in-between, and prepare for the next great adventure.

**********

6. Sometimes following a dream and building a beautiful home life can make you feel like you are two different people.  Get in touch with what you value and what is ultimately important. And above everything, make sure YOU are on that list!

**********

7. If you love to drum, drum fearlessly. If you love to sing, sing fearlessly. If you love to get your groove on, get your groove on…you got it….fearlessly!

**********

8. Don’t just make great music, SHARE great music.

**********

9. Celebrate what you have accomplished.

**********

10.When life gets bumpy, rock-n-roll! (Even though Ted Nugent walks with a cane off stage, you would never know it when he is on stage. He gives 110%.)

**********

And One to Grow On (because it is my favorite): Don’t be afraid to close your eyes,fully open your heart, reach out and touch the light.

So now you know some of the best kept secrets for living like a RockStar.

Now go out and be fearless.

Hand Made Life

When I was a young girl, I used to watch my grandmother as she turned a single strand of yarn into ethereal works of art. She made doilies. As her fingers worked quickly forming magical mandalas, her voice spun stories to capture our attention.  Her hands were like two puppet dancers, moving in rhythm then pausing to illustrate an aspect of the tales she told. When she was done, she invited us onto her lap. Her hands held ours, sometimes in silence, but volumes of information passed between them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are loved. You are valued. You are my world. And whatever might have been off, whatever might have been hurting, in one touch of her delicate hands was healed.
My grandmother, who I called Mommy Duff, was one of the first people I remember finding myself in. She was playful, creative, wise, loving, and rather wild. She didn’t roll like others. She danced to her own tune (and she really did love to dance).  I remember thinking, even when I was very young, that I wanted to be like her.  But I didn’t really look like her, so I used to pretend that I inherited her hands, that place where her womancrafts, her stories, and her energizing touch came to life.
I have been thinking a lot about my hands recently. They are my co-workers. In the studio, they lead my art adventures. They dance over the keys, bringing my thoughts out for all the world to witness.  But there is one aspect of what my hands love to do that I have had placed on the upper shelf for several years, just out of reach. Over a decade ago, I became licensed as a massage therapist, probably some of the most valuable work my hands have created.
My first teacher was not part of the school. She was a woman who felt called to healing through her hands before there were licenses and regulations by the government. I took a reflexology class from her just before starting my formal education. She took me aside at the end of the class and held my hands in hers. I remember feeling that her hands got very warm and then I heard her speaking words over them.  That evening when I left, I felt like I had been anointed, blessed.  Ever since, I have considered that moment with her a gift. And ever since that night, I have felt my hands connected to my heart.
As I have been working towards doing more of what I love, my wish to include massage again has become stronger and stronger.  So, for the last month, I have been working on making that happen.  Yesterday, I picked up a key for the massage studio I am going to work out of and should be getting my massage chair back from the upholsterer next week.
Blending art, writing and massage together feels as if I am bringing together a formula for personal success. It feels like I am living from a very sacred place in my soul.
This last week when I glanced down at the tops of my hands in the sunlight, I noticed the fine lines that are beginning to take shape. They are some of the first hints of the coming of my wise woman years (besides the multiplying strands of grey that have graced my head for several decades).  I play scared about them sometimes. Oh, no, look!  Wrinkles. But in my heart, I am deeply grateful for them. They reflect that royal line of queens I have emerged out of. They are tiny map markings which record the path I have traveled and the promise of adventure that awaits me.
One of the first nights that I started bringing this creative biz to life, I drew a hand which eventually became the logo for that business, for Creativity Tribe.  When I first looked at it, it was simply an interesting hand, but as I discover where my soul calls Creativity Tribe to grow, I know that hand is a talisman, leading me to my destiny, announcing what I value, and calling out to others to join their hands with mine.
