The Art of Play

What a beautifully busy day! I got so much done in so many areas of my life. Some days the ability to push ahead just seems to come easily.

At the days end, I figured I would head up to bed early, which if you read yesterday’s post about pulling all nighters, you would know that 1 a.m. is early for me right now. But just before heading up stairs, I did a quick walk through of my studio.  I am having a Ya-Ya Party this weekend to do the Illuminata project face-to-face with some friends and family and we are scrambling to organize the studio (sigh). Sometimes to fix a mess, you have to make a mess, and such is the case today.

So I tucked this thing into that spot and made a home for these things over there, until I came to a newly bought and quickly forgotten bag of potpourri. Now, I don’t usually buy potpourri. But this, if I may say, was heaven. Citrus and vanilla yumminess abounded!

First I sniffed, then opened the bag for an aroma extravaganza. I looked for something to pour it into and discovered a bowl from my very first pottery class. I wiped out the bowl and carefully filled it with large pieces of rock salt and dried natural goodies that had been drenched in the fragrant oil. It was beautiful. I thought about how it looked like a little Autumn wonderland.

Suddenly, I was in play mode. I grabbed a few items from around my studio and tucked them into the bowl.  First a tag that I used to hold a message that I wanted to remember about this moment, then, a desert rose I had been given when my grandmother passed, and finally, a tiny sculpture in the shape of a round bellied woman. The small figure has an opening in her abdomen and serving as a focal point for meditations sometimes. I have several, which I have named Palm Altars. The tiny tummies are perfect for holding small stones, seeds, or coiled up messages.

This little world is my offering for AEDM. I look forward to continuing to play in this environment as the season passes. It’s message may even help me to stay present and make the most out of the beauty in my life…which I must say is abundant!
